Frederick's Notebook – February 2006

Returning from winter visits with family and friends, I though about how our lives are made up of diverse connections around the world, and how our families and communities can be as boundless are our hearts are open. This spirit is what Dagobians are all about, and it is one of the greatest gifts we can share.

You are an important part of our community, and it is our dedication to your happiness that drives us to search for exquisite cacao and craft pure chocolate perfection. We care about your health so we don't use additives or fillers - just pure organic cacao, at times mixed with unrefined sugar and pure plant essences. Believing that the earth is everyone's to share, we use only organic cacao and non-gmo ingredients, and manufacture with entirely renewable energy. May you savor a bit of Dagoba along with each delicious moment life has to offer, share with friends and repeat often.


Cacao producers are also an integral part of our community, so we source our high-grade fine flavor cacao through direct relationships to ensure that producers earn enough to invest in their families, their villages and the environment. In 2005, I visited our producer partners in Costa Rica and checked out possible new sources in a few other countries. With each of these visits, our community expands in size and I feel a renewed sense of respect and responsibility for cacao, its rainforest surroundings and the growers. In between visits, the growers update us about improvements they've funded through cacao sales, such as purchasing more processing equipment and dedicating time to nurturing threatened heirloom cacao strains. In 2005, I also became acquainted with sloths that live on the Costa Rican farm we work with and truly love these quiet and slow yet clearly wise and strong creatures.
