Madagascar
Madagascar is the source of the cacao used in our Sambirano chocolates. This exceptional trinitario cacao from the Sambirano region offers a light, complex flavor with distinct citrus notes. Its essence expresses the breathtaking, ecologically rich rainforests that nurture cacao other native flora and fauna.
This is our first chocolate made with cacao from the African continental area. Madagascar lies off of Africa's east coast. The Sambirano region lies on Madagascar's north eastern edge.
Madagascar is a haven of biodiversity with a critical need for conservation and restoration. It holds 5% of the world's plant and animal species, including lemurs, primates, unique birds and the baobab. About 80% of the plants and animals in Madagascar exist nowhere else due to its geographical separation from other lands.
Madagascar's rainforests are facing increasing deforestation, threatening the species that live there and pushing some into extinction. Sustainable cacao farming is critical in preserving and restoring these subtropical forests. The surrounding native forest, in turn, feeds the cacao and gives it its unique flavor. Local communities earn sufficient wages from selling cacao and other sustainably grown products, so they can maintain the rainforest and invest in their communities.
